21:00 The Chemical History of a Candle - by Michael Faraday English The Chemical History of a Candle is a series of 6 lectures on chemistry presented to a juvenile audience in 1848. Taught by Michael Faraday - a chemist and physist, and regarded as the best experimentalist in the history of science - it is probably the most famous of the Christmas Lectures of the Royal Society. Taking the everyday burning of a candle as a starting point, Faraday spans the arc from combustion and its products, via the components of water and air (oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon), back to the type of combustion that happens in the human body when we breathe. The final lecture "On Platinum" describes a then new method to produce large quantities of Platinum. It was delivered before the Royal Institution on February 22, 1861. Tijdstip Programma Taal Opmerkingen
0:00 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.5 - Stephen Hawking - A Brief History Of Time  English About the life and work of the cosmologist, Stephen Hawking, who despite his near total paralysis, is one of the great minds of all time. (Duration 1:25:50)
1:30 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.6 - Brian Cox - Do you know what time it is ? English Particle physicist Professor Brian Cox asks, ‘What time is it?’. It’s a simple question and it sounds like it has a simple answer. But do we really know what it is that we’re asking? Brian visits the ancient Mayan pyramids in Mexico where the Maya built temples to time. He finds out that a day is never 24 hours and meets Earth’s very own Director of Time. He journeys to the beginning of time, and goes beyond within the realms of string theory, and explores the very limit of time. He discovers that we not only travel through time at the speed of light, but the experience we feel as the passing of time could be an illusion. (Duration 1 hour)
2:30 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.4.1 - Michio Kaku - Time - Episode 1 – Daytime English In this four-programme series, string theory pioneer Michio Kaku goes on an extraordinary exploration of the world in search of time. He discovers our sense of time passing and the clocks that drive our bodies. He reveals the forces of time that make and destroy us in a lifetime. He journeys to some of the Earth’s most spectacular geological sites to look for clues to the extraordinary depths of time at a planetary level. Finally, he takes us on a cosmic journey in search of the beginning (and the end) of time itself. Episode 1 – Daytime: Time seems to drive every moment. It’s the most inescapable force we feel. But do we experience time from within our minds and bodies or from the outside? (Duration 1 uur en 40 sec)
4:00 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.4.2 - Michio Kaku - Time -Episode 2 – Lifetime English Episode 2 – Lifetime: The most powerful effect of time on our lives is the way it limits us. Our knowledge of death is so embedded in our lives and spirituality that, were immortality possible, would we lose the sense that makes us human? (Duration 1 uur en 59 sec)
5:00 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.4.3 - Michio Kaku - Time - Episode 3 – Earthtime English Episode 3 – Earthtime: We hold a unique knowledge of time, realising that it stretches deep into the past, and will continue into the future. How does this affect our sense of who we are? (Duration 1 uur 1 minuut en 37 sec)
6:00 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.4.4 - Michio Kaku - Time - Episode 4 – Cosmictime English Episode 4 – Cosmictime: We’ve always structured our lives based on an unchanging past and a predictable and ordered future. But atomic and cosmic discoveries have changed all that. What is time itself? And will it ever end? (Duration 1 uur en 37 sec)
7:00 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.7 - Is Time Travel Possible ? English Is Time Travel Possible ?     Horizon’s Time Trip is a thrilling journey deep into the strangeness of cutting-edge physics – a place where beautiful, baffling ideas are sometimes indistinguishable from the utterly crazy. On this journey, we meet a time-travelling pizza, a brilliant mathematician in a ski mask and even God. The journey ends with a strange and dark conclusion – one which calls into question our very existence. Ever since Einstein showed it was theoretically possible, the quest to travel through time has drawn eccentric amateurs and brilliant scientists in almost equal numbers. The amateurs include Aage Nost, who demonstrates his time machine in front of the cameras. The professionals include the likes of Professor Frank Tipler of Tulane University. His time machine sounds good – but it would weigh half the mass of the galaxy. There is, however, one way that time travel to the past could be possible. And it would be much more convenient. Future civilisations could use computers to create exact replicas of the past. Unfortunately that idea has physics trembling in its socks. Because if you can generate a perfect virtual reality version of the past, who’s to say we are not one of the replicas? (Duration 60 minuten en 51 sec)
8:00 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.8 - Through The Wormhole - Is Time Travel Possible ? English Einstein’s Theory of Relativity says that time travel is perfectly possible — if you’re going forward. Finding a way to travel backwards requires breaking the speed of light, which so far seems impossible. But now, strange-but-true phenomena such as quantum nonlocality, where particles instantly teleport across vast distances, may give us a way to make the dream of traveling back and forth through time a reality. Step into a time machine and rewrite history, bring loved ones back to life, control our destinies. But if we succeed, what are the consequences of such freedom? Will we get trapped in a plethora of paradoxes and multiple universes that will destroy the fabric of the universe? (Duration 46 minuten en 8 sec))
8:45 SciTechTalk Documentary 0010.9 - Through The Wormhole - Is There a Creator ? English It’s perhaps the biggest, most controversial mystery in the cosmos. Did our Universe just come into being by random chance, or was it created by a God who nurtures and sustains all life? The latest science is showing that the four forces governing our universe are phenomenally finely tuned. So finely that it had led many to the conclusion that someone, or something, must have calibrated them; a belief further backed up by evidence that everything in our universe may emanate from one extraordinarily elegant and beautiful design known as the E8 Lie Group. While skeptics hold that these findings are neither conclusive nor evidence of a divine creator, some cutting edge physicists are already positing who this God is: an alien gamester who’s created our world as the ultimate SIM game for his own amusement. It’s an answer as compelling as it is disconcerting.
